Water Issues in Basement? Try These 4 Solutions First
The Wet Basement Problem
According to the American Society of Home Inspectors, 60% of US homes have wet basements, and 38% are at risk of growing mold.
That's a whopping 82 MILLION homes that are in need of being waterproofed!
If you are one of these 82 million households - don't panic - there are four things you can try that'll hopefully prevent your basement from getting wet!
Take These Steps to Keep Water Away From Your Foundation:
1. Clean your gutters
Gutters are supposed to move water away from your foundation, but if they're clogged, they won't do that. Water will overflow onto the ground, and pool around your foundation. As the soil is soaked, the water will create pressure against the basement walls and floor, and push its way through. Keeping your gutters free of debris is a easy way to prevent this!
2. Extend your downspouts
If your downspouts are spitting water out at least 5 ft. from your foundation, then you won't have to worry about water pooling around your home.
3. Grade the ground to slope away from your home
The ground should be sloped around the entire perimeter of the home. If you do this, then water can properly drain away from your foundation, and prevent serious water and foundation issues.
4. Install an efficient waterproofing system
Every basement should have a sump pump and dehumidifier, no matter what! A dehumidifier controls the moisture in your basement, and prevents condensation and mold. A sump pump collects water and funnels it away from your home's foundation.
