Worried About Basement Flooding? Prevent It Before It Happens
While you cannot predict if or when your basement will flood, you can take steps to prevent it before it becomes an issue:
Repair Cracks
If you notice cracks in your basement wall or floor, have a professional inspect them to determine the best method of repairing them. While the cracks may not be leaking now, they could in the future. Fixing them ensures a heavy rain doesn't cause bigger problems in your basement.
Install an Interior Drainage System
An interior drainage system collects water and moves it out of the basement. If water gets inside, it will go into the drainage system rather than filling up the basement. Oftentimes, these systems are connected to a sump pump, which will pump the water out.
Install a Sump Pump
As noted above, a sump pump removes water from your basement. They kick on when needed to get rid of the water and keep your basement dry. Plus, backup pumps can be installed. These begin working if the main pump fails and are often battery-operated so they keep going even if the power goes out.
Sump pumps can also have alarms. An alarm will alert you if you sump pump isn't working correctly.
