Musty Smell Coming From Crawl Space? Lambertville, MI Crawl Space Encapsulation by HomeSpec
Challenge
If you would not invite moisture into your basement, why would you invite moisture into your crawl space? There is a reason that basements avoid having vents. Crawl spaces, however, often have vents. Their original purpose was to prevent moisture by allowing outside air to dry the crawl space. Unfortunately, many homes experience the opposite effect where damp air enters through the vents causing mildew and rot. Not to mention, these vents also allow pests, vermin, and allergens into the home as well.
When a Lambertville, MI family returned home from their vacation, a musty smell was present throughout the house. After some investigation, they realized their crawl space was the culprit and sought to install a vapor barrier. They decided to give HomeSpec Waterproofing and Foundation Repair a call for a free estimate.
Solution
After inspecting the home, Zach, a senior project manager, offered his professional opinion for a permanent solution. Yes, encapsulating with a CleanSpace® vapor barrier would address some elements of the problem; however, there were more factors. He suggested also installing a crawl space vent cover over every vent and a SaniDry Sedona crawl space dehumidifier. These products would act both preventatively and actively in moisture control and management. The vent covers would prevent the issues commonly associated with crawl space vents while the dehumidifier would regularly work to cleanse the air and maintain the homeowners’ desired level of humidity. The homeowners agreed to these products to ensure a permanent solution fixed their crawl space. After Jon, a HomeSpec foreman, and his team installed everything, the family was happy with the final results.
